Directions......It's very easy to find the registration point and start for this race. Just take the by-pass around Youghal and at the top of the hill, take the slip road that takes you into Youghal. After a few hundred metres, you'll see the school shown above on your left hand side. Parking is available at the school and on grounds adjacent to the school. Please do not park on the road outside the school as this is part of the race route
Profile...
Course...The start of the race is just up the road near the water tower....
The first few hundred metres are largely flat as you run back towards the school...
After you pass the school, you come to a junction around 0.5 miles where you turn off left...
This section is very fast as you drop about 60 metres in elevation over the next 0.8 miles. At 1.3 miles, you come to the end of the hill and a t-junction where you turn left...
There is a gentle climb around the 2 mile mark as you head into the town...
At 2.4 miles, you come to the top of this small hill as you pass the lighthouse. Later on, you'll be passing this again but coming from the opposite direction...
At 2.5 miles, you begin a gradual descent...
At 2.8 miles, you begin the start of a small elongated loop which is essentially dead flat...
The road now is narrow as it goes between tall buildings on either side of the road. Just up ahead at about 3.4 miles, you run under the iconic Clock Gate Tower (Built in 1777, the town's Clock Gate was built on the site of Trinity Castle, part of the town's fortifications. The Clock Gate served the town as gaol and public gallows until 1837; prisoners were executed by being hanged from the windows).
Probably best not to dwell too much on the 'gallows' part ;o) .
From here, the road continues past some small shops. At about 4 miles, you reach the far end of the loop and begin the return leg...
At about 4.5 miles, you pass the famous Moby Dicks bar...
From there, you come to the end of the loop and head back up to the small lighthouse.
At about 6 miles, you have downhill section followed by a flat run into the finish line...
Overall.....It's a very fast fast 10km course that starts high above the town and finishes near sea level. There are really no climbs or pulls worth talking about...it's either downhill or flat. Always a popular race.
