Preview of the Togher 5 km road race...

Location...Togher is located on the south side of Cork City and can be accessed from the South Ring Road...

Directions...Togher can be approached from a number of directions. The instructions below are for anyone who maybe perhaps is coming from outside Cork and doesn't know the city too well.

The directions are for someone who has driven through the Jack Lynch Tunnel and is now on the South Ring Road....
As you approach the flyover for the Kinsale Road Roundabout, take the left lane for the Airport...Pic 1.  Follow the white signposts for Togher and on the far side of the roundabout, you are on the slip road in Pic 2 with the South Link Road on your right.

The road narrows and at the next roundabout...Pic 3, you need to turn right and cross a bridge up and over the South Link Road. On the far side at the next roundabout, you take a left on to the Tramore Road...Pic 4

After a few hundred metres, you come to a junction where you turn left...

This takes you back over the South Ring Road and the race HQ is just there on the right. Note the various locations and where they are as shown in the map below.

From the school, it's 700m to the finish line and 1.2kms to the start line.

Race HQ...Togher Boys National School...Entries / Changing / Prize giving and refreshments...

Church...local landmark almost straight across the road from the Togher AC hall. Plenty of parking here...

Course profile...

Course description...
The race starts about 1.2kms away from Togher National School. As Ryan's SuperValu is the main sponsor, the race starts outside their shop...

As you can see in the photo above, it is on a slight decline so the pace will be very fast from the start. After about 200-300 metres, the course takes a sharp right and up a small climb. After this, it levels off as you run through a housing estate...

This video of the course from Togher AC gives a good idea of what the course looks like...

Some other photos from out along the course....
At about the 1.6 km / 1 mile mark, you start the loop....

This is where the course comes back out later on. For now, it's on towards the 2 km mark and the next junction just beyond it where you turn left...

Once around the corner, you have the second hill on the course. As courses go, this one is pretty small. From the junction, the road rises gently as it passes the entrance to St.Finbarr's Cemetery...

This stretch lasts for about 300m before you turn off left into a residential area...

Along this stretch, you pass the 2.5 km half-way point. This is also the highest point of the course.

Just after the 3 km mark, you are in a quiet residential area..

From this point, the last 1.9 kms are practically dead flat.

At 3.8 kms, you come to a T-junction where you turn right. This is where you ran past earlier...

From here, you run back the Clashduv Road and then right into Deanwood Avenue. Other than a few speed bumps, it's an easy run into the finish line...

Overall.....Located in the south side of Cork City, this race is within easy access of a lot of people. While the course does have two small hills, the course would be considered to be reasonably fast.
