Preview of the Youghal 5km road race...
This 4 mile road race takes place in the town of Youghal in East Cork...
The course is on the eastern side of the town...
The race HQ is in the Youghal Community Centre. There is plenty of parking nearby.
See map below for the course. Basically, it starts near the roundabout at the northern end of the town and goes south-east. Note the km markers. At 1.8kms, you reach the most southerly point where you turn right and head back up the main street. Under the Clock Tower...past the Community Centre...then right and at the T-junction, you turn left. You head back up to the start line before turning aroung and coming straight back down to finish by the Youghal Visitor Centre.
Course...The race starts near the roundabout. As you can see, it's dead flat....
At 800m, you come to a junction where you carry on straight ahead. Later, you'll come back here to take in an out and back section up to the start line before coming back down this road again.
Along the back of the town......
...and at 1.1km, you pass Fishermans Quay...which will be about 4.7kms when you come back here for the second time.
At 1.2km, the race passes the famous pub named the Moby Dick after the 1956 film of the same name starring Gregory Peck and directed by John Huston.
Just beyond the Moby Dick pub is the tourist office. The race will end here on the left.
After 1.5km, you pass the town hall...
...and then the road narrows as it begins to climb. This is the only 'hill' on the course but it is more of a minor drag than anything serious. You really shouldn't lose too much time on it.
Another view...
This brings you onto South Main Street as you head back on the eastern leg...
Around the 2.2km mark, you run under the iconic Youghal Clock Tower...
Past the main post office...
At 2.7kms, you turn right onto Dolphin Square...
...and then at 2.8kms, you turn left...
You then proceed back to the start line and back again to the finish line by the visitor centre.
Overall......A 5km road race through the streets of Youghal. Since the construction of the by-pass, the traffic levels here are low. Very little in the way of any drag so it's a very fast course. Expect to set a fast time.
